Demonstrators protest controversial pipeline planned for Northern B.C.
Posted May 16, 2025 9:04 pm. Demonstrators gathered at Premier David Eby’s Point Grey constituency office Friday morning to protest a controversial pipeline being considered in B.C. A number of members from various Indigenous and environmental groups were on hand to speak out against the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission (PRGT) Project. The project is a proposed 900-kilometre natural gas pipeline that would run from northeastern B.C. to Pearse Island, north of Prince Rupert. Critics say the PRGT pipeline would pass through critical wild salmon watersheds. Janelle Lapointe, one of the organizers of the demonstration, says the project is backed by the same people who bankrolled Donald Trump’s reelection. “It’s an American-owned project backed by Wall Street’s biggest donors, so we are concerned about handing over public funds and Indigenous lands to American investors during this time,” Lapointe said. The government has previously stated the project would help the province’s energy sector and would provide jobs to multiple northern communities. The project was first pitched over a decade ago but needed to be rerouted. Lapointe says the environmental assessment certificate for the project ran out years ago. — With files from John Ackermann
